Rimm Chae conveys the sublime spirit and sensibility of infinite nature and express what she has come to understand in her creative process. Using natural materials such as ottchil (Korean lacquer), wood, hemp cloth, and hanji (Korean traditional paper), she tries to paint an inner landscape of “ecological value—the coexistence of life and nature.” Jitae ottchil is a traditional technique of layering hanji and gluing the pieces with ottchil. Rimm takes a contemporary approach by repeating the process of creating hanji folds and applying ottchil. This draws attention to the matière that cannot be expressed by drawing alone. Abstract and figurative paintings exist in the harmony created by these layers, effectively conveying nature’s vitality. As she contemplates nature by viewing it as a subject of landscape, she comes to understand that she coexists with nature and interact with it in a symbiotic way, just as nature cures and restores itself.
