Ottchil (Korean lacquer), Hemp cloth, Mother-of-pearl, Silver on wood
60x40 cm  (x4)
2017

Upon a smooth, black lacquer canvas, delicate gold brush strokes glisten like snowflakes and add depth to this painting. The white lacquer, which at a glance may seem like the gold plating used in najeonchilgi, requires a meticulous hardening process. Varying in shade, in some places it shows up sheer, while in others the white hue is much more prominent against the black background. The white mother-of-pearl sculptures, shaped into traditional Korean patterns and placed upon the canvas, come across like snowflakes falling on a winter night, or cotton flowers peeking through the snow.
